I started playing the piano at the tender age of six. Or maybe it was eight. I don't really remember. I know I hated lessons though. So, I quit and started playing the violin and the saxophone. Imagine a 4’3” kid carting a violin, a Selmar Mark VII Tenor and a King Alto around with him. It sure didn’t help my popularity issues. Eventually, I quit those and tried my had at the cello, the classical guitar, the flute, the clarinet, the harmonica. None really stuck, so I went back to the piano. Only this time I resolved to play on my own terms — which meant no lessons.
Cut to college where a floormate kept coming into my room with his guitar. I told him, “You want to come in, teach me how to play.” He didn't, of course. But that didn't stop me from teaching myself.
Now, many years later, I still play the guitar and the piano. I was in a band for 30 seconds. My style? Good question. Guitar: I call it Hyper Acoustic Folk. Piano: somewhere between Pop and Easy Listening—but all songs are generally written in minor keys and played very aggressively. And the classical voice training of my youth has paid off with a pretty significant range. So I do it all. The demo I cut is all me—except for the drums. When god was handing out rhythm I must've been doing something else.
