Yes, I know I'm writing this on the internet and, therefore, propagating the inanity of your every day user. So be it.

Recently I was introduced to the viral video Drinking Out of Cups. I laughed my ass off; actually started to cry it was so funny. I was then told the story of how it came about. Some dude and his friends all dropped acid, this guy went into a closet and started talking to himself. The dude's friends tapped his ramblings. This audio file was then found by an animator who created the video.

That's the back story.

Thinking is was funny, I wanted to see what people were saying about it and if anyone had remixed it. That's when I came across a page that had this explanation - I've edited it to make a point:

the video for 'drinking out of cups' (2003 meetle mice) seems to be going viral again, this time in the comedy world. sara silverman posted it on her twitter and 'opie and anthony' discussed it on their radio show. there is an amazing amount of disinformation and completely wrong information about this piece and i just want to clear some things up.

in 2002 i recorded myself watching television with the sound off doing a character that was meant to embody long island culture (where i grew up).

5. I HAVE NEVER DONE ACID, AND LIKE JEFF LEWIS, NO I DON'T WANT ANY ACID, THANK YOU

6. YES, THAT IS ME TALKING AND I WROTE THE PIECE

7. ITS A CHARACTER SATIRIZING LONG ISLAND STEREOTYPES

8. THE SONG CAME OUT IN 2003

9. THE VIDEO CAME OUT IN 2006

its really insane to me that i have been the subject of two separate viral videos that exist simultaneously inside and outside of my music career. the internet is a strange place. i don't really know how i feel about this kind of stuff. while my work is weird and some what "experimental" its not that weird or that "experimental" where it should cause so much confusion and bewilderment among the mainstream audiences that it comes across. but i guess thats what happens when anything is out of the immediate ordinary.

i guess i should just be glad so many people enjoy it. however, to have it be stated that i was on acid time and time again takes away from any of the creative process i put into the piece. i'm not sure i'm getting my point across but i am tired of writing this and need to get back to work on whartscape. love you all.

OK... Fine. The guy writes a statement on the origin of the piece. All good so far.

Now for the part that horrifies me: the responses to Dan's post. Understand, I don't care if he was on acid or not. But, having done my fair share of recording in the past, I do know this: if I were tripping balls and decided to record my friend who was sitting in a closet talking to himself I doubt I would have the focus necessary to get a recording device, set it up and successfully get a clean recording without atmospheric noise in the background. I'm just saying.

Oh, and the last one is my personal favorite. When you get there, realize this is the future of America talking here. This is what happens when you let conservative law makers cut education to make way for national defense. This is what happens when law makers of both sides act as the Haves while screwing the rest of the country creating an even greater divide between them and the Have Nots. This is what happens when we loose site of what the forefathers wanted for our country and Greed, Lies and Manipulation take the place of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. Perhaps a strong statement to make while talking about Drinking Out of Cups, but if this doesn't show the reality of what's out there, I don't know what else will. This was sent to me by a dear friend. I did not write it but it speaks to why I whole heartedly disagree with the passing of Prop 8. This isn't a gay/straight issue, this is civil rights issue.

This is the problem. The gay community does NOT share the same rights as other married couples. The list below is a sample of this gross misunderstanding. The civil rights we take for granted are not yet shared with our fellow Americans. We are not the land of the free yet, but we can be the home of the brave. We can continue to educate our friends and neighbors about this misunderstanding. Share this information with anyone that believes civil unions = marriage! This is not an issue of morality, opinion, or ownership of the definition of a word, it is the CIVIL RIGHTS ISSUE of this generation.

Question: What are the legal benefits of marriage?

With the denial of gay marriage, gay and lesbian couples are kept from more than just a ceremony and marriage certificate. There are many real legal and economic benefits of marriage that gays and lesbians are denied because they are not allowed to marry. What are the legal rights and benefits of marriage?

Answer: According to Lambda Legal Defense, more than 1,400 legal rights are conferred upon heterosexual married couples in the United States. By not being allowed to marry, gays and lesbians are denied these rights. Even in the state of Massachusetts, the only US state with legalized gay marriage, most of the benefits of marriage do not apply, because the Defense of Marriage Act states that the federal government only recognizes marriage as "a legal union of one man and one woman as husband and wife".

Here are some of the legal rights that married couples have and gays and lesbians are denied:

Joint parental rights of children
Joint adoption
Status as "next-of-kin" for hospital visits and medical decisions
Right to make a decision about the disposal of loved ones remains
Immigration and residency for partners from other countries
Crime victims recovery benefits
Domestic violence protection orders
Judicial protections and immunity
Automatic inheritance in the absence of a will
Public safety officers death benefits
Spousal veterans benefits
Social Security
Medicare
Joint filing of tax returns
Wrongful death benefits for surviving partner and children
Bereavement or sick leave to care for partner or children
Child support Joint Insurance Plans
Tax credits including: Child tax credit, Hope and lifetime learning credits
Deferred Compensation for pension and IRAs
Estate and gift tax benefits
Welfare and public assistance
Joint housing for elderly
Credit protection
Medical care for survivors and dependents of certain veterans

These are just a few of the 1400 state and federal benefits that gays and lesbians are denied by not being able to marry. Most of these benefits cannot be privately arranged or contracted for within the legal system. Of those that can be legally prepared, the cost is far more than the average $100 marriage licensing fee that grants these rights to heterosexual couples.

If you still hold firm to your definition of marriage, won't you at least join the fight for equal rights of all United States citizens?
